Meet Debbie Pushor
Passionate about balance, relationships, community, and equity on the school landscape, Debbie is a mother and educator with parent engagement as her driving focus. Having experienced schooling as a student from Grade 1 through doctorate, as a public school teacher, consultant, principal, senior administrator, and now as a researcher and teacher educator, Debbie is working to create a place and voice for parents in their children’s schooling.
Parent Engagement:
A Familycentric Worldview
Debbie teaches, works, and researches predominantly in the area of parent engagement. With the intent of creating meaningful and authentic connections between parents, teachers, and students, parent engagement centers the place and voice of parents in their children’s learning, at home and at school. Historically, parents have been marginalized in relation to their children’s schooling, with the work of schools seen to be the domain of professional educators. Often unprepared for their work with parents, some teachers find parent relationships to be the most difficult part of their jobs. Enhancing parent and teacher beliefs and practices of “walking alongside” enables everyone to feel heard, valued, and engaged in a profoundly transformative education process.
