Emma Chen wins 2021 Provost’s Graduate Student Teaching Award
On April 6th, it was announced that Emma Chen, one of my doctoral students, was awarded the 2021 Provost’s Award for Graduate Student Teaching at the University of Saskatchewan. Emma taught an undergraduate early childhood course in language and literacy in the Fall term and received great evaluations from her students. With her research into maintaining Heritage language in the home context, Emma added rich knowledge, experience, and insights to course content and to preservice teachers’ understandings of diverse children and families.
In providing their “enthusiastic” congratulations, Provost and Vice-President Academic Airini wrote:
The Selection Committee for the Provost’s Teaching Awards met recently and unanimously agreed that you be awarded the 2021 Provost’s Graduate Student Teacher Award. Your commitment to teaching and learning is made evident through your creation of inclusive learning environments, your support of students through the pandemic, integration of the Learning Charter, practical assessments and assignments, and creativity in your teaching.
Working with Emma is such a gift! I believe that who we are as a teacher is just as important as what we know or do as a teacher. Emma is a curious, intelligent, passionate, respectful, and humorous individual. These qualities endear her to students, to colleagues, and to all who have the privilege of working with her. I congratulate her on this amazing achievement!
